City Administrator updates commission on creek maintenance work

Madison City Commissioners received an overview of the city’s 2021 creek maintenance work during their regular meeting on Monday.  City Administrator Jameson Berreth said he put together the presentation because creek maintenance was the lowest rated city service according to an October 2021 community survey.

Berreth said that the creek includes Silver Creek, Park Creek, and Northwest Park Creek and covers just more than five miles within city limits.

Berreth told commissioners that city employees put in more than 650 hours of labor on creek maintenance during the past year, and total labor and equipment costs were close to 48-thousand dollars. He said that work was done in a number of areas this past year.

After flooding in 2019, the city has repairs planned for creek walls in three different sites over the next couple of years.  This year, Berreth said that bid and construction is planned at Site One-which is North of 7th Street.  He said that project costs close to 556-thousand dollars.

The second site for creek wall repairs is Memorial Park.  Berreth said that construction on the creek walls in Memorial Park is expected to be completed by mid-summer of 2023 and will cost more than two-and-a-half-million dollars.

The third site for creek wall repairs in the city is from Egan to Harth Avenues.  Berreth said construction on that project is expected to be completed in the winter of 2023 and cost just more than one-point-four-million dollars.

Berreth commended city employees for their work on the creeks this past year.

City commissioners on Monday approved Banner Associates to do the final design work and construction administration services on Site Two – which includes Memorial Park and 4th and 5th Street Bridge Improvements.
