DSU Splits Doubleheader With Mayville State

In yesterday’s doubleheader against Mayville State, the Dakota State softball team split the doubleheader to win the series, winning the first game 5-0 and then losing the second game 2-0.

Neither team was able to score in the opening inning of the first game, but then the Trojans opened up the scoring with a run in the second, followed by another run in the third to grab the 2-0 lead. 

The Trojans then ballooned their lead in the sixth with a three-run inning to help give them the 5-0 shutout victory over the Comets.

The Trojans had six hits in the game compared to the Comets four hits. MSU left six runners on base while DSU had two runners left on base.

Mackenzie Sims had a double for Dakota State. Alexus Foster, Rosie Philop, and Hannah McFarland each added a single and an RBI. Carrington Entringer and Sophia Cordova each tallied a hit.

Sam Shumway, Miquela Pino, Alyssa Avila, and Isis Johnson each recorded a single for Mayville State.  

Bricker (W, 3-6) tossed her second straight complete game victory in the series for DSU. She scattered four singles and recorded six strikeouts.

Sidney Fairbanks (L, 0-9) took the setback after pitching a complete game for MSU.  She allowed five runs (three unearned) on six hits.

In game two of yesterday’s doubleheader, it was Mayville State who grabbed the early lead and didn’t let go. 

The Comets scored two runs in the opening inning, and neither team was able to score the rest of the way, as MSU won 2-0 to avoid a DSU series sweep.

Both teams registered four hits in the game and did not commit a defensive error. The Comets left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans with five runners left on base.

Philop led DSU with two singles. Sims and Jacquelyn Folkers each added a single. 

Brooke Roeges had a double and an RBI for MSU. Mackenzie Hughes added an RBI. Erika Howell recorded a double and a run scored.

Grace Ortmeier (L, 2-6) took the setback, despite pitching a complete game for Dakota State.  She allowed two runs on four hits.

Courtney Boll (W, 2-5) earned the complete game victory for Mayville State, scattering four singles. She also struck out six DSU batters.

DSU’s season-high four-game winning streak came to an end after the setback, standing at 6-16 overall record and 5-3 NSAA conference record. The Trojans matched their best eight-game conference start from last year, as well as the 2018 season. Mayville State is 2-14 overall record and 1-7 NSAA conference record.

The Trojans are scheduled to host Presentation on Friday and Saturday in another NSAA four-game series, with time and location still to be determined.
