Madison Mayor says city can’t mandate mask wearing in local businesses

Madison Mayor Marshall Dennert said that the city cannot make it mandatory for businesses to require people to wear masks during this COVID-19 pandemic time.  Mayor Dennert told Madison City Commissioners during their meeting Monday that he had been approached by some residents asking if the city could enforce having businesses require masks to be worn by their employees or by their patrons.  He said he discussed the issue with City Attorney David Jencks.

Commissioner Adam Shaw also reiterated his plea for residents to wear masks if possible, as he said that the local number of COVID-19 cases continues to increase. Â
