Area residents affected by flooding and storms last fall have just more than a week left to register for federal disaster assistance.  January 17th is the deadline for people to register for disaster assistance.

Disaster Recovery Centers are open currently in Madison, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Alexandria.  The Center in Sioux Falls is closing this Saturday. Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the state, and other agencies are available at the Centers to assist people with registration or other questions.

FEMA officials encourage anyone who has been affected by flooding during the September 9th through 26th timeframe to register for disaster assistance, even if property has already been cleaned, repaired, or replaced.  They say residents may be eligible for reimbursement for disaster-damaged items, as well as for clean-up costs. FEMA can also provide supplemental aid if someone’s insurance falls short of covering some losses, and there is assistance available also for eligible renters who lost personal property or who are displaced.

To register for federal disaster assistance: Call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 or TTY: 1-800-462-7585. Or register online: www.DisasterAssistance.gov .
