City commission approves ordinance regarding cannabis establishments

The Madison City Commission has approved second reading of an ordinance addressing zoning for cannabis establishments within the city.  Commissioners approved first reading of the ordinance during their last regular meeting, and City Administrator Jameson Berreth said Monday that no changes had been made to it.

Berreth said that the ordinance allows up to two each of cannabis dispensaries, testing, cultivation, and product manufacturing facilities.  He said that more than one establishment could be located within the same building, but testing facilities would need to have separate accesses.  Berreth said that any of the facilities will need separate licenses to operate.

Berreth said during the last commission meeting that the city hasn’t received any applications for permits for any cannabis dispensaries yet.  The city commission last fall established the licensing application fee of 15-hundred dollars for cannabis establishments, along with an annual fee for the license of one-dollar per capita based on the city’s official census population.
