Dell Rapids Teams Punch Tickets To State Tournament

Two more teams from the Cornbelt League punched their tickets to the 2020 State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Thursday night. Dell Rapids PBR scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Madison 4-3 and the Mudcats of Dell Rapids won in extra innings over Lennox, 8-7.

In game one, it was a back and forth affair early on, with the two sides knotted at 3 after four innings. That score would hold until the top of the eighth, Aaron Hanson walked to lead off the inning and would eventually score the winning run on an error. Madison got the game tying run on base in both of the final two innings but were unsuccessful in their attempt to get a run across.

The night cap reached its conclusion a slightly different way. Lennox Only One answered a run scored by the Mudcats in the first, pushing six runs across for the early advantage. Dell Rapids would slowly chip away at the deficit, scoring five unanswered runs to tie the game at sevens in the seventh. Lennox loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth innings with two outs, but a groundout to second base quelled the threat. The Mudcats would score the winning run in the top of the 10th on an RBI double by Mark Houck.

Our district tournament continues this evening with two more state qualifying games. At 6pm, Salem and Lennox will square off, followed by Madison versus the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks. Coverage begins on AM1390 and then game two can be heard on FM103. You can find tournament results and more information at the Cornbelt page
