Trojans Shut Out on the Road; Drop Game to Mayville State 13-0

The Dakota State Trojans fall to 0-5 after their loss on the road to Mayville State at Jerome Berg Field.

Another one of those days where a good start was all the opposing team needed to run away with this one. An 81-yard bomb from opposing quarterback Tim Salmon to Javeion Davison to open the scoring with the only touchdown of the game. DSU couldn’t manage to find the endzone and tack on points against the Comets. Even after the defense gave up less than 200 yards of total offense (193).

The loss marked the first win by head coach Rocky Larson of MSU against a current North Star Athletic Association opponent in his tenure. Also Mayville State’s first conference win since Nov. 11, 2021.

QB Joey Cole and the offense couldn’t get it going in the first half. The Trojans gave freshman QB Tray Hettick a shot out there in the second half and nothing came of that either. DSU’s defense was the great equalizer that kept them within arms reach all night long. Half of the Comets drives in the game (7-of-14) were held to a three-and-outs by the Trojans for a total of -11 yards. The Trojan defense finished with four sacks plus a forced fumble and recovery by Devonte Murphy.

The other thing that didn’t help out the Trojans was putting them in good field position. Five of those 14 drives for MSU were in Trojan territory. In which the Comets came away with six points due to the favorable field position. Credit to the defense for it only being six.

Another one of those games where the Trojans got in their own way in some instances. DSU had nine penalties for 83 yards. Coming into the game, through the first two NSAA games, the Trojans had 11 penalties for 75 yards. Mayville State did nothing fancy on offense, but made enough plays to get the job done.

Next Game

Next the Trojans will travel back to North Dakota, but this time to face No. 23 ranked Dickinson State at Henry Biesiot Activities Center. Kickoff will be at 2pm with pregame beginning at 1:30pm on Jammin Country 103.
