Trojans Dominate Comets in NAIA Top 15 Matchup; Extend Win Streak to Double Digits

The #11 ranked Trojan Women’s Basketball team protected homecourt on Friday against the #13 ranked Mayville State Comets, winning 71-48.

A dominating performance from the Trojans in this NAIA Top 15 matchup. DSU improves to 18-4 overall and 6-0 in North Star Athletic Association play. The Comets were the ones who struck early. They began the game with a 7-0 run, but Dakota State responded finishing the quarter 21-8. DSU led by 10 at the half and forced Comets star Jordan Zrust into five first half turnovers.

Dakota State ran away with the game in the second half. They asserted themselves in the paint all night long and the Comets couldn’t stop it. DSU led 40-18 in points in the paint. The Trojans have scored 154 points in the last two games and 92 of them have been in the paint. A team that makes their living on the perimeter mostly, has been commanding the interior.

That dominance is led by Tabor Teel who continues to impress as the season progresses. As well as Savannah Walsdorf, who has also made a living around the rim. Both of these players were the top two scoring leaders in the game.

Teel led all scorers with 22 points off the bench. Three points shy of tying her career-high (25). Walsdorf finished the night with 16 points. Angela Slattery also finished in double figures with 10 points. Slattery also led with a game-high eight rebounds.

Mayville State didn’t manage their usual high amount of trips to the foul line. Having just three total attempts in the game. The Trojans held Zrust and Mackenzie Hughes to just nine points each. Well below each of their season averages of 15+ points. The Comets finished with 22 turnovers in part due to 16 Trojan steals.

With Walsdorf’s three made free throws in the game she now sits 3rd all-time in FTM with 313 total. She has also taken sole possession of 5th all-time in made threes with 177 3PM after her one made three in this game. The Trojans now sit alone atop the conference in sole possession of first place at a perfect 6-0 in NSAA play.
