Three Cornbelt Teams Are Eliminated and One Moves On in the Class B Amateur State Tournament

It wasn’t the best weekend for the Cornbelt League in the 2021 South Dakota Amateur Baseball State Tournament, as Dell Rapids PBR, Lennox, and Colman lost on Saturday, but Salem ended the weekend with a victory.

Both Dell Rapids PBR and Lennox lost 6-5 on a walkoff in the early games on Saturday. Dell Rapids scored four between the seventh and eighth, but Lesterville’s Ethan Wishon smacked his third hit and the RBI-single gave the Broncs the walkoff win. Walker Hultgren drove in the tying run for Lennox in the ninth of game two on Saturday, but Larchwood’s Chase Vander Feen drove in the game-winning single in the 10th off of JD Kirchner. The third loss came from the night cap of a pitcher’s duel between Colman and the Redfield Pheasants, with the A’s going down 4-1. Tied at six entering the bottom of the seventh, Brian Duxbury smashed a full count pitch to left field and out of Cadwell Park to give Salem the 8-6 lead. Jake Giles finished off the final two innings for the Cubs and sent Salem to the second round.

Tonight, Flandreau has the early game and they take on Mt. Vernon at 5:30 p.m., and the Dell Rapids Mudcats play tomorrow, also at 5:30 p.m., against Wynot. Both games can be heard on Dakota’s Best AM1390. On Wednesday, Salem plays in the second round against Winner/Colome at 7:30 p.m. and that game can be heard on Jammin’ Country 103.

Outside of the Cornbelt, Kimball/White Lake beat Elk Point 8-1 on Saturday and Winner/Colome beat South Central 10-3 to finish the first round on Sunday. Dimock/Emery and Plankinton advanced to the quarterfinals in the last two games on Sunday. Alexandria and Volga play tonight at 7:30 p.m., Lesterville and Larchwood play the 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, and Kimball/White Lake play the Redfield Pheasants for the first game on Wednesday.
