Mudcats take two from the Broncos

The Dell Rapids Mudcats spoiled the Madison Broncos home opener on Sunday, taking a pair of games at Flynn Field. The two time defending State Champions opened the first game of the double header with a 16-0 win in 5 innings.
The Mudcats took control with a 6 run 2nd inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Mark Abrehamson. The Dell Rapids catcher added another 3-run home run in the 5th inning, and finished the game 3 for 3 with 10 RBI. Chad Hunt was also 3 for 3, with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Dalton Lehnon did not allow a baserunner in the 5 inning game, striking out 8 of the 15 Madison batters he faced. The lefty was also 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI.
Madison took the first lead in game 2 of the doubleheader. Trey Smith doubled and came around to score on Nathan Ricke’s RBI single, to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. But the Mudcats would rally quickly, scoring multiple runs in each of the next four innings, en route to an 11-1 win in 5 innings.
The Broncos walked 12 batters, and hit 2 more in the game. Abrahamson added 3 more RBI’s, for the Mudcats, giving him 13 in the doubleheader. Carter Gullikson and Chad Hunt each scored twice. The Mudcats improved to 5-1 in league play this year, while the Broncos fell to 1-5.
Madison will travel to Salem on Thursday, while Dell Rapids will host Lennox.
