The DSU Football team picked up a 35-14 road win over Mayville State on Saturday afternoon, ending a two-game losing streak. The Trojans had to weather an early storm, throwing a pick-six and fumbling on their first two offensive possessions of the contest. Fortunately, Dakota State’s defense was able to stop the Comets and the offense responded with a touchdown drive to take a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter.

The first touchdown of the game for DSU was the first of three on the ground by Brodie Frederiksen. Mayville answered with a touchdown drive of their own and added a trick-play two point conversion to go up 14-7 early on in the second quarter. A few minutes later, DSU would use a four play 54 yard drive to tie the game on another short touchdown run from Frederiksen. The Trjoans would then take the lead for good on their next drive, going 11 plays and Torren Devericks found Justin Folkers on a play action pass for Folkers for reception of the season!

On the first offense drive of the second half, Devericks found Frederiksen for a 59 yard touchdown pass to give DSU the 28-14 lead. Brodie would put the cherry on top in the game and also climbed to the top of the career rushing yards list at DSU, scoring on a 45 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Fredericksen (3,391 yards and counting) passed Jeff Rodman (3,339) on his way to 144 yards on the ground and 254 all-purpose yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Dakota State defense played well against a dual-threat quarterback, coming up with three interceptions and a fumble recovered plus six sacks. Not only did DSU snap a two-game losing streak, it was also their first win on the road this season. Trojans now at 4-4 overall and 2-3 in NSAA play will be back in action this Saturday with a 4pm kickoff vs Valley City State University at Trojan Field.
