DSU Track Comes Away with Various Individual Titles and Top 10 Finishes Over the Weekend

A number of different athletes from Dakota State competed over the weekend at Dakota Wesleyan and various came away with Top 10 finishes, personal records and qualifying times.

Women’s Track

A pair of DSU Women’s Track & Field athletes came away with individual titles this weekend. With the indoor meet held at DWU/Avera Sports and Wellness Complex.

Lindsey Roth broke the school record for the 1000-meter run for the second time this season.  She was able to capture the 1000-meters individual title by improving her personal and school record times of 3 minutes, 4.39 seconds. Her previous record was 3:04.78 set back at the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invitational in Brookings, S.D., on Jan. 20.

Valerija Curikova was the other who claimed an individual title, with hers coming in the 3000-meter run. With her finishing time of 10 minutes, 34.63 seconds in the race.

A number of others placed in the Top 10 over the weekend. Including Amelie Steins who came in third in the 60-meter dash, Anna Schneider who placed fourth in the 600-meters, Saddie Palmquist finishing seventh in the 600-meters, Kierra Miller had a sixth-place finish in the mile run, Madelyn Sylva posted a personal record time to finish ninth in the mile. Oliviyah Thornton earned a fifth-place finish in the shot put, Gabriella Peitzmeier added a season best mark to place seventh. Thornton came in sixth in the weight throw and the team of Schneider, Roth, Palmquist, and Brooke Beaucaire placed seventh in the 4 x 400-meter relay.

The Trojans finished sixth overall as a team in the standings, scoring 34 points.

Men’s Track

The DSU Men’s Indoor Track & Field squad finished second in the Dakota Wesleyan Alumni Invitational indoor track & field meet on Saturday.

The Trojans had a great showing with five throwers placing in the Top 10. Jacob Joachim, who already set the NAIA ‘B’ provisional qualifying mark earlier this season, led the Trojans with a third-place finish, Jackson Zastera had a fourth-place finish and Houston Lunde came in fifth. 

Zachary Haugen produced a season-best mark to finish seventh in the weight throw for DSU and James McClain registered a personal best mark to place ninth. McClain claimed the individual shot-put title for the Trojans. His shot-put mark is the second best in DSU’s school history.

Johansen posted a personal record and placed third in the shot-put, putting him at the eighth best shot-put mark in Dakota State men’s indoor track & field school history. Trenton Moran also added a personal record to finish seventh, followed by Zastera with a ninth-place finish. The team of Nolan Slominski, Curtis Johnson, Evan Slominski, and Cody Farland clocked the fifth fastest time in school history and a season-best time in the 4 x 800-meter relay, winning the title.

Farland hit the NAIA ‘B’ provisional time in the 800-meter run, earning a runner-up honor in the race with a personal record time. E. Slominski added a fourth-place finish, followed by Evan Armstrong with a seventh-place finish.

N. Slominski led the Trojans with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Chantz Minear clocked the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.28 seconds for DSU. Minear came away with the individual title, breaking his previous school record time of 8.18 seconds set in the NAIA Preview/D2 Open on Jan. 26-27. T. Roberts added a third-place finish in the race. Minear also added a personal record in the pole vault, clearing the height of 3.90 meters to place seventh.

Nathan Ingalls placed fourth in the triple jump for Dakota State. Joshua Krull led the Trojans with a third-place finish in the 600-meter run. Tyler Nicke had a sixth-place finish, followed up by Dawson Miller finishing ninth with a personal record time. 

Harrison Greathouse clocked a personal best time to claim a fourth-place finish in the mile run. Taylor Myers followed up with fifth place and Blake Schmiedt added a sixth-place finish.

Next Meet

The Trojans will get set for their final regular season action next weekend with a pair of different indoor meets. The Trojans will be taking their throwing/field teams to Mount Marty to compete on Friday in Yankton.

DSU also competes in the NCAA Division I meet, the South Dakota State Indoor Classic. The Trojans return to Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on Friday and next Saturday in Brookings.
