DSU Baseball sets school records in double-header split

Strikeout records were set, and home runs were flying on Thursday afternoon at Flynn Field in Madison. The DSU Trojans belted out 5 home runs in first game Thursday’s double-header, but Valley City matched them with 4 of their own, as the Vikings took a 12-9 lead into the bottom of the 9th inning. DSU then rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning, to win the game 13-12. The Trojans scored 6 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, and an error in the 9th. 

Jace Pribyl blasted three home runs in the game for DSU. Ryan McDaniel added a pair of solo home runs, On the mound, Will Clair racked up 14 of DSU’s school record 20 strikeouts. It’s was the second time this season Clair has struck out 14 in a game. Noah Daugherty and Grant Svikulis each worked in relief, and Devin DeBoer earned the victory after working for the final out in the top ninth.

Trojan pitchers racked up another 13 strikeouts in game 2, but this time Valley City was able to hang on to their lead with a 13-5 win. The Vikings hit another 3 home runs in the victory. Most of the DSU offense came off a 3-run home run from Braxton Lacher. Mitsuki Shimonishi took the loss for the Trojans, falling to 5-2 on the season. Shimonishi finished with 9 strikeouts, Carver Hultgren added 4 more punchouts in relief. 

DSU pitchers have now struck out 340 batters this season, a new school record. The Trojans record is now 26-12 overall, and 13-5 in the NSAA. Those 13 conference wins are tied for the most NSAA wins in school history.  DSU and Valley City wrap up their four-game series with another doubleheader Today, starting at 12 p.m.
