Robert Hauck

Robert D Hauck, 95 of Lake Preston, SD died Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD.

Robert Duaine Hauck was born September 26, 1926 to Robert O. and Helen (Julson) Hauck.  He grew up in the Lake Preston and DeSmet areas, other than a brief period when the family moved to Idaho.

Bob graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1944 and joined the United States Navy in 1945.  During his time in the service, he was selected for one of Admiral Byrd’s expeditions to Antarctica.  That time was a source of rich memories throughout his life.  His service assignment in meterology led to a lifelong hobby of tracking weather statistics.

Bob attended South Dakota State College in Brookings when he returned from the service and married Darlene Lundquist on August 27, 1950.

The couple returned to the Lake Preston area after his graduation from college and began a career in farming.  During those years, he was also active in the community serving on the Lake Preston School Board the Lake Preston Co-op board, the rural telephone board and various positions in the United Church of Christ.  He was also a member of the Lake Preston American Legion.  He enjoyed Allis-Chalmers farm equipment and his collection of tractors and penguins.  The couple enjoyed travel, dancing and treasured time spent with family.

They retired and moved to Lake Preston in 2008 and into Silver Plains Assisted Living in 2019.  He continued to live there after her death in 2019 and moved to the United Living Center in Brookings a week prior to his death.

Bob is survived by two sons, Brad Hauck (Joan Wollschlager) and Reed (Mary) Hauck and one daughter, Shelly (Dennis) Nelson all of Lake Preston; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria (Walter) Swenson of Rapid City, SD; numerous nieces and nephews, other extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; a son Greg; his parents; his brother, Jack Hauck; his sister, Rosemarie Green; as well as two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law and their spouses.

Funeral services for Robert D. Hauck will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at the Lake Preston United Church of Christ with Pastor Kris Larson officiating, burial will be in the Lake Preston City Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour before services in the church on Saturday.
