Matthew Benson

Matthew Benson, 26, of Montrose passed away February 17, 2022.  A funeral service will be held Monday, February 21, 2022 at 1 PM at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.  A private family burial will follow at the family cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorials  will be donated to Matthew’s favorite charities.

Matthew Richard Benson was born on December 6th, 1995. He is the youngest of three children and named after his grandfather, Lester Richard Krossin. He grew up in Monticello Utah with his sister Nicole, his brother Colton, and his parents, Scott and Wendy Benson.

Matthew grew up on an acreage where he could run free and enjoy the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, attend horse camp and spend time with his family. Matt was a member of the 4H horse program the Kickin Calvary synchronized riding team, church youth group, and the high school golf team. He loved spending time with his Dad and Colton during the elk and deer season. He loved his yellow dog Gus, and loved to go fishing with Shelly King. Matt worked hard cutting wood, rebuilding pallets, and shoveling snow for some extra cash as a teenager.

Matt graduated from Montrose High School and then went on to Mitchell Tech to pursue a career as a power lineman and substation tech in South Dakota. He graduated from MTI with an associate’s degree, and began his apprenticeship program in the Missouri Valley region. Matt was looking forward to topping out of the program in just a few short months. He, his brother Colton, and Pops were blessed with the opportunity to work together on the same crew for MJ Electric over the course of several months. Matthew said that he learned more from his brother during that time than he did in school or the rest of the apprenticeship. They were all a blessing to each other.

Matt had a deep connection with friends in Monticello and a fondness for the mountains in southern Utah. He talked about returning some day if he had an opportunity. Matthew worked hard in school and out of school. He was always there for his family when they needed him. He loved to cook, garden, and can vegetables with Mom, and later in life developed a skill for smoking meat and hosting cook outs with the family. Matt loved going to concerts and took Mom as his date to the Chris Stapleton concert last fall. He also spent a lot of time with Colton and family around the fire, wrestling with his brother, and playing cards.

Matt was a born again Christian and a student of the bible. People always commented about how special he was. He always tried to do what was right. His smile lit up the room and his laughter was contagious. Matt always had a way of making people feel good. His nieces and nephews loved him and he was so good with them. “Uncle Matt” was the apple of their eyes. Matt loved to golf with Earl, Easton, Kent and Kristi. He was at times wise beyond his years, and very thoughtful. Many people told him that he had an “old soul” in a young body. Matt stood out in the crowd, He had integrity, and was very good at being a good friend.

Matt lives in Paradise with Jesus now. We miss him so much, love him so much and will miss him every day until we meet again. This is not the end. Matt simply stepped through the door to eternity with his Lord and Savior. We know that in God’s time, he will be there waiting for us with that beautiful smile and those sparkling eyes.
