Janice M. McCormick was born on August 21, 1937 in her parents’ home in Bridgewater, SD. She was born only minutes after her twin brother James (Jim), who liked to remind her who was the eldest. They remained close throughout their lives, as she did with all her siblings. After living in Bridgwater, SD for several years, and then Marion, SD, the family moved to Salem, SD. Her and Jim learned to play piano at a young age and the duo was a local favorite as they played one piano together at the same time. She attended St. Mary’s High School, and after graduation she went on to study Nursing at Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD.

In 1956 she married John Uphoff and shortly after they moved to Terraville, where they lived for several years, after which they moved to John’s family farm located in Spencer, SD. In 1972, they moved to an acreage near Corson, SD. She made child-rearing her noble focus, having 7 children. For a period of time, she worked as a nurse’s aid at McKennan Hospital, and she also owned her own cleaning business. She loved gardening and having tea with friends and family. A devout Catholic, she enjoyed teaching Catechism and playing the organ for church services.

In 1986, Jan met her husband Robert (Bob) Workman at a local cafe. They were married in 1987 and stayed living in Sioux Falls together. They enjoyed taking trips to Ottumwa, IA together to visit Bob’s family. They also enjoyed boating and fishing together in Chamberlain, SD. Being outdoors and camping was their favorite pastime.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 34 years, Bob Workman of Sioux Falls; her daughters Margaret (Mike) Elzway-Omaha, NE; Mary (Davis) Miller-Boise, ID and sons Martin-Plattsmouth, NE; James-Sioux Falls, SD; John V.
