Gladys Button passed away March 25, 2023 at Park Place Assisted Living in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage on Monday April 3, at 2:30 pm with visitation at 1:30.

Gladys Mae Hall was born September 5, 1925 to Seth and Hope (Sneesby) Hall on their farm southwest of Carthage, SD. She attended the Older country school and graduated from Fedora High School.  She moved to Huron, SD where she found employment as a telephone operator.  Since this was during World War II, the telephone employees were given leave to spend harvest season on the family farm.  Shocking grain required many man hours, and the men were at war.  Gladys was well experienced in shocking grain.

When John Button, Jr. returned from his tour of duty in the Philippians, the two Carthageans renewed their friendship.  On March 30, 1946 Gladys married the loved of her life.  Now she was a farmer’s wife.  She was always ready to help Johnnie with chores and occasional fieldwork on their farm near Carthage.  They always enjoyed having a well-painted and mowed farmstead.  They were honored to be named master lamb producers in 1980.

Gladys and John had two children, Veronica and Verlyn who were raised to value hard work and education.  During those years they were 4-H leaders and Luther League advisors.

Gladys enjoyed extension club and ceramics classes.  She was active in the American Legions Auxiliary and Trinity Lutheran Church.

She learned to paint pictures and crochet after the kids were grown.  Johnnie and Gladys learned ballroom dancing after they became grandparents.  Once they learned, they attended many area dances.

Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her brothers George (Edna) and Ernest (Dorothy) and in-laws Louis (Helen) Button, Russell Button, Mae Rose (Lloyd) Boomgaarden, Joyce Hall, Martin Nylund, and Delbert Gillam, and her son-in-law Gary Williams.

Those left to cherish her memory, her sense of humor, and her laugh include daughter Veronica Williams of Brookings, son Verlyn (Nell) Button of Carthage, her very beloved grandchildren Threasa (Wayne) Hopkins of Arlington SD, Garron (Alyssa) Williams of Mankato, MN, Jon (Amy) Button of Brookings, and Brian (Kim) Button of Oronoco, MN and her eight cherished great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Ben Button, Noah, Zoe, and Jonah Williams, William Hopkins, and Kaylee and Kyleigh Button. She also leaves her sisters Ardyce Nylund and Eunice Gillam and her brother Seth Hall and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Many thanks to Park Place Assisted Living and staff as well as Asera Care Hospice personnel for the loving care Gladys received.
