Donald “Bill” Johnson, age 74, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at
Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Memorial service will be at 1 PM on Friday, February 10th at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel. Visitation
will be 6-8 PM on Thursday at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the
service. A private family inurnment will be in Graceland Cemetery this coming spring. Online register
book is at www.rustandweilandfuneral.com. Donald William Johnson was born in Madison, SD on February 18, 1948 to Donald A. & Ernestine
(Marienau) Johnson. He attended Madison Public School. He married Diana Atwood on March 23, 1968
in Sioux Falls until their divorce in 1996.
He drove truck for several trucking companies such as Apple Lines, All American, Trade Winds Express
and Hunt Transportation. He shifted gears for a short time and worked for the Madison Daily Leader and
PPD before getting back to truck driving for Dale Schutt of Chester until his stroke. When he was not
driving truck, he loved spending time with family and friends, especially his “Angels.”
Grateful for sharing his life are his son, Bob (Nancy) Johnson of Madison; daughter, Ellen (Dean)
Unzelman of Sioux Falls; 5 grandchildren-Stacia Perry (Derek Hitzemann, Morgan Johnson (Chandler
Cannon), Kristina Unzelman (Jared Cox), Sydney (Avery) Williams and Bryn Johnson; 6 stepgrandchildren- Lisa (Ryan) Klein, JoDean Decker, Aaron Unzelman, Abby Engel, Cooper Engel, Tanner Engel and 8 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Deb (John) Krause of Madison and numerous other relatives and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and several other relatives.
