A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Betty May Ortman Lambertz went home to be with Jesus on October 31st at the age of 87 years after a 7 yr battle with cancer.  A memorial service will begin at 2 pm on Friday, November 5 at the United Church of Canistota.  To view Betty’s service, click on the link below:

Betty was born to Elias and Mary (Ensz) Ortman on August 12, 1934.  She was baptized in the Bethel Church near Dolton in 1949 by Rev. Jacob Tieszen and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

She was married to Leroy D. Ayotte on February 16, 1951, by Rev. Walter Doty in Marion, SD.  To this union two daughters were born, Charlotte Sue and Debra Mae.  LeRoy died March 6, 1953.

She married Wayne Parry in 1958.  Wayne died in 1981.

She was united in marriage to Orval Lambertz in Canistota on October 29, 1983.

She worked at the Ortman Hotel and Café in Canistota and the Ben Franklin stores in Freeman and Salem.  She also was employed by Spencer High School as a secretary.  Until her retirement, she worked at the Old Barn Store in Canistota.

Betty was a member of the United Church in Canistota and had belonged to the Dorcas Society and helped with suppers and other events at the church.

Betty enjoyed doing fancy work, such as crocheting and embroidery, and especially spending time with her family. She enjoyed when her brothers visited to share precious memories of farm life.

Orval’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a very special part of her life. She enjoyed their visits and family get-to-gethers.  She was devoted to her daughters, granddaughters, and grand-son-in-law.  She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren appreciated her drawings, Gramma Bars, stories, and calling her ‘Grandma Bertz’.  She always had words of wisdom and humor to share with her family.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands LeRoy, Wayne, and Orval; brothers Robert and Eugene; 1 sister-in-law Dolly (Elizabeth) Ortman; 1 brother-in-law Louie Fuerst, 2 sons-in-law Dennis Heitzman and Gene Pritchard; 4 stepchildren, Teresa Lambertz, Chuck Lambertz, Noreen Hagen and Carol Williams.

She is survived by her daughters Charlotte (Joseph) Volden, Canistota, and Debra Heitzman, Spencer; granddaughters Laurie (Wim) Rosendahl and Karin Heitzman; 1 brother Larry (Marilyn) Ortman including 2 brothers-in-law, Randy (Linda) Parry, and Bill (Zelda) Ayotte and 2 sisters-in-law, Judy Fuerst and Lois Ortman. She is also survived by stepchildren John (Nina) Lambertz, Cindy (Chip) Fischer, Julie (Wayne) Gregory, Colleen (Mary Jo) Lambertz, Jo Ann Lambertz, Les Hagen, and Riley Williams, plus many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren plus a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
