Arnold Scheuren

Arnold Scheuren, 99, of Spencer, SD passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 24, 2023 at Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell.  Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 am on Friday, December 29 at Church of the Epiphany in Epiphany, SD.  Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm on Thursday with a 6:30 pm prayer service and rosary, also at the church.

Arnold Scheuren was born November 21, 1924 in Epiphany to Peter and Marie (Eich) Scheuren.  He grew up on the family farm near Epiphany.  Arnie served in the Army for three years during World War II.  He married Zina Schroeder on November 28, 1950 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.  Together they farmed and raised their family on the farm near Spencer, SD.  They moved off the family farm into Spencer in 1982. Arnie continued farming with his son, Ray, until 2020, when his health wouldn’t allow him to anymore.

Arnie was a member of Church of the Epiphany and was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.  He was known as the “Iron Man” and spent many hours cutting iron, along with buying and selling goods.  He loved scuffling with his grandkids and great-grandkids, “until you say Schmidt!”.

Arnold is survived by:  his children, Diane (Lynn) Haiar of Alexandria and Ray (Sandy) Scheuren of Spencer; grandchildren, Brandon (Becki) Haiar, Shannon (Casey) Tegethoff, Crystal (Lee) Jager, all of Alexandria, Mandy (Mike) Sorensen of Omaha, NE and Liz (Kyle) Kampshoff of Alexandria; 11 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way); and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zina and siblings, Don, Mary Lou and Henry (Ruth).

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
