A flurry of second chance points helped to keep Vermillion out in front of the Madison boys on Monday night, as the Bulldogs suffered a 64-57 road loss to the Tanagers. Vermillion led almost the entire game, including 33-27 at halftime. The Tanagers pushed the lead to 10 points in the 3rd quarter, before Madison closed it to six again at the start of the 4th.

The Bulldogs got to within three points with under a minute to go, and seemed to get the defensive stop they needed to tie the game. But another Vermillion offensive rebound set up a Dillion Gestring three pointer that put the Tanagers up 60-54. Madison’s Keaton Nighbert responded with a three of his own, but Gestring scored again on the next possession, and sealed the win for Vermillion.

Cody Brown and Tyler Tappe delivered most of the offense for the Bulldogs. Brown finished with 22 points and 7 rebounds, while Tappe ended the game with 20 points and 7 boards. Nighbert added 6 for the Bulldogs in the loss. Gestring had a game high 28 for Vermillion.

The Bulldogs fell to 12-5 on the season, while the win also puts Vermillion at 12-5. Next up for Madison is a trip to Dakota Valley on Friday, as part of a doubleheader with the Panthers.Â
