Opening up the season on the road Saturday, the Madison basketball squads came away with a pair of victories at Elk Point/Jefferson, as the girls won 53-40 and the boys 50-49. In the girls game, it was a fairly tight first three quarters, Madison held the lead for most of that stretch, but never by more than a couple of buckets. A hot stretch in the fourth quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs lead bubble to 18 points with three minutes left. Zoey Gerry finished with 15 points, Audrey Nelson chipped in with 14 off the bench and Sophia Vanden Bosch finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Madison shot 49 percent in the game, compared to 26 percent for EPJ.

The second game of the day saw a little more exciting finish. Madison outscored the Huskies by 8 points in the second quarter to hold that advantage at the break. Elk Point/Jefferson slowly chipped away throughout the second half and after a missed front end of a one-and-one, the Huskies got a fast-break layup to lead by one with just a few seconds left. A foul in the backcourt set up another one-and-one situation. Carter Bergheim stepped to the line and hit both, a following half-court shot was no good and the Bulldogs escaped with the one point win. Aspen Dahl finished with 15 points, Bergheim with 11 and Connor Hivley had 10 to lead Madison.

Bulldog basketball returns to action on Tuesday, a doubleheader at Tri-Valley.
