Madison Man Pleads Guilty to Possession of Controlled Substance and DUI

A Madison man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges stemming from a traffic stop last year in Lake County. 30-year old Mitchell Benson entered the pleas in Lake County Circuit Court. On November 13th of 2022 law enforcement pulled over a vehicle for speeding, driving with no front license plate, and driving on the wrong side of the road. Officers on the scene said Benson’s speech was slurred and appeared to smell of alcohol. He argued with authorities and refused to exit the vehicle. Officers used a taser to remove him from the automobile. He was later found to also be in possession of a THC cartridge. 

Benson pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance, which is a class 5 felony, punishable by up to 5 years in the State Penitentiary. He also pleaded guilty to one count of 2nd offense DUI. 

Circuit Judge Pat Pardy scheduled sentencing for May 23rd.Â
