Trojans Swept By Blue Hawks

The Dakota State softball team was swept by Dickinson State yesterday, as they fell by scores of 6-5 and 11-0.

The Blue Hawks grabbed the lead early in the first game after an 2-RBI Double in the bottom of the first helped them get to an early 3-0 lead. The Trojans were able to answer in the top of the second, tying the game at 3-3.

DSU added two more runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 5-3 lead. However, after the Blue Hawks hit a 2-RBI Double in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game back up they were in position to get the walk-off victory, which did, to secure the 6-5 win.

The Trojans outhit the Blue Hawks 10-9 in the game. DiSU committed three defensive errors compared to DaSU two defensive errors. Dakota State left nine runners compared to Dickinson State six runners left on base.

Hannah McFarland was 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles for the Trojans. Rosie Philop added a double, single, and drove in two runs. Michelle Evdos added two singles and an RBI.  Maycee Bricker had a double and an RBI.  

Rhea Paiva paced the Blue Hawks with a double, two singles, and two RBIs.  

Bricker (L, 6-10) took the setback after working for 6 2/3 innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She allowed six runs on nine hits. 

Arjana Eilers started the game for Dickinson State, pitching 2 1/3 innings. She gave up three runs on five hits. Mitchell worked for 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits in relief.  Martinez (W, 4-7) earned the victory after tossing three scoreless innings and yielding the Trojans to one hit.

The second game was not nearly as close for the Trojans as the first.

Dickinson State once again grabbed the early lead, scoring two runs in the first. However this time, the Blue Hawks never gave up the lead. 

After hitting a pair of triples in the second, the Blue Hawks were able to bring in five more runs in the inning to extend their lead to 7-0. A 3-RBI Double in the third ballooned their lead to 10-0. 

After getting one more run in the fourth, the Blue Hawks were able to end the game in five innings, getting the 11-0 win over the Trojans.

Entringer, Evdos, McFarland, Sims, and Hannah Feser each recorded a single for Dakota State.

Ari Martinez finished the game by going 3-of-3 at the plate with a triple, double, single, and collected four RBIs for Dickinson State.

Mason Usselman (L, 0-6) recorded the defeat in the pitching circle for the Trojans. Philop and Sophia Cordova also pitched in relief.

Alexa Kappel (W, 6-3) earned a complete game victory for the Blue Hawks. She gave up five hits.

Dakota State fell to 12-27 overall record and 11-10 record in the league. Dickinson State extended their winning streak to seven games to improve their overall record to 19-23 and 14-9 NSAA conference record.

DSU is slated to close out their regular-season schedule with a five-game home stand at Thue Field, starting Thursday afternoon in a make-up North Star doubleheader with the conference’s leader Bellevue. First game is set for 3pm.
