Trojans Softball Swept by the Bruins

The Dakota State softball team was swept by Bellevue in yesterday’s doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 8-1. 

In the first game, it was the Trojans who scored first, taking a 3-0 lead after the first and a half. Bellevue answered in the bottom of the second with their first run of the game to make the score 3-1. 

The Bruins then smacked a 3-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give them their first lead of the game at 4-3. They added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, and with the Trojans unable to answer, that allowed Bellevue to take the first game with a 5-3 final.

The Trojans outhit the Bruins 6-5 in the game. Dakota State committed two defensive errors compared to Bellevue with no defensive miscues.

Carrington Entringer went 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles, RBI, stolen base, and scored a run for Dakota State. Sophia Cordova had a double and an RBI. Rebecca Hazlett added a single, walk, and an RBI. Rosie Philop and Maycee Bricker each registered a hit.

Lauren Jurek led Bellevue with a home run, single, and drove in four runs. Liana McMurtry added two doubles and scored twice. 

Bricker (L, 5-7) took the setback in the pitching circle for DSU. She tossed a complete game and allowed five runs on five hits.

Katie Cunningham started the game in the pitching circle for BU, working for 1 2/3 innings. She gave three runs on five hits. Gunn (W, 6-2) recorded the victory in relief, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings. She yielded the Trojans to one hit and registered six strikeouts.

In the second game, the Trojans again grabbed the first lead, but it was short-lived. After the Trojans scored one run in the top of the second, the Bruins answered with six runs in the bottom of the same inning. 

For a second straight game, Bellevue had a 3-Run home run that allowed them to take control of the game, hitting the big run in the second inning as they gained the 6-1 advantage.

Bellevue extended their lead in the bottom of the third with another run to go up 7-1, before scoring their final run in the bottom of the sixth. DSU was kept off the scoreboard after scoring the initial run of the game, allowing the Bruins to win game two 8-1. 

BU outhit DSU 10-6 in the game. The Bruins left 11 runners on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.

Entringer and Philop each hit a double for Dakota State. Cordova tallied two singles.  Mackenzie Sims and Hazlett each recorded a single. Grace Ortmeier earned an RBI.  

Reese Floro led Bellevue with two singles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Sami Reding added a home run, single, and three RBIs. Jurek had a double and a single.  

Ortmeier (L, 3-7) recorded the defeat after working for 1 2/3 innings for DSU. Cordova tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits.

Jurek (W, 6-2) earned a complete game victory for BU. She limited the Trojans to one run on six hits.

After the two losses, the Trojans fell to a 10-20 overall record and 9-5 record in the North Star contests. The Bruins raised their overall record to 23-9 and stretched their conference lead to three games after lifting their record to 12-2. 

Dakota State returns to a neutral site for the North Star four-game series with Viterbo this weekend. The series will be held at Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls, SD, with the doubleheader starting at 2pm Saturday and 12pm Sunday.
