Trojans Shutout By Mustangs in Doubleheader

In yesterday’s non-conference doubleheader, the Dakota State softball team was shutout by a combined score of 18-0 against the Morningside Mustangs.

It didn’t take long for the Mustangs to take control of the first game, scoring at least three runs in each of the first three innings. 

Up 3-0 heading into the top of the second, the Mustangs blasted a three-run home run to extend their lead to 6-0. Morningside hit another three-run homer in the third before taking a ten run advantage. 

After outhitting the Trojans 13-3, the Mustangs took the first game with a 10-0 final.

Mackenzie Sims was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and single for the Trojans.  Rosie Philop added a single. 

Sydney Petersen went 3-of-4 with a home run, two singles, and drove in four runs for the Mustangs. Mykel Ann Gray added a home run and three RBIs. Taylor Richter and Vanessa Bohuslavsky each added two hits.  

DSU’s Mason Usselman (L, 0-4) took the setback in the pitching circle after working for 2 2/3 innings. Sophia Cordova tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, yielding the Mustangs to one hit.

Grace Buffington (W, 11-5) earned the win after pitching two innings for MU. Morgan Secora and Maggie Fisher combined to toss three scoreless innings in relief.

The second game started similarly to the first, as Morningside once again used a large first inning to gain the early advantage, as they scored four runs in the opening inning.

Neither team scored for the next few innings, until the Mustangs again registered four runs in a single inning, as they brought in four runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 8-0 which would be the final.

Carrington Entringer, Hannah Feser, and Jacquelyn Folkers each registered a single for the Trojans. Entringer swiped one base.  

Kennedee Jones and Mackenna Sidzyik each recorded a hit and tallied two RBIs. Gray and Vanessa Bohuslavsky each added a hit and an RBI.  

Cordova (L, 2-2) took the defeat after working for four innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. Grace Ortmeier tossed 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Jordan Skradski (W, 2-0) earned the victory for Morningside after pitching three shutout innings.  Bralen Biddlecome worked three scoreless innings in relief, giving up three hits.

Dakota State fell to a 10-18 overall record, while Morningside lifted their overall record to 21-8.

The Trojans return to NSAA action, playing a mid-week doubleheader at Bellevue tomorrow afternoon.
