Trojans Score 47 Runs in Tripleheader to Get the Series Win

In Sunday’s tripleheader against Viterbo, the Dakota State softball team had a big day on the scoreboard, falling in the first game before grabbing wins in the final two games.

Viterbo took the first game on Sunday after getting out to the quick 8-1 lead after four innings. DSU scored one run in each of the final three innings, but it was not enough to close the gap as the V-Hawks won the first game 10-4. 

VU outhit DS U13-8 in the game. The Trojans committed four defensive errors compared to the V-Hawks two defensive errors. Viterbo left nine runners on base, while Dakota State had four runners left on base.

Michelle Evdos and Sophia Cordova each had a solo home run and an RBI for Dakota State. Carrington Entringer added a triple and single. She swiped one base and scored once. Mackenzie Sims had a triple and an RBI.  

Morgan James went perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, triple, and three singles for Viterbo.  

Maycee Bricker (L, 5-8) took the loss in the pitching circle for DSU, despite tossing a complete game. She gave up 10 runs (5 unearned runs) on 13 hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters.

Morgan Fuhrer (W, 4-0) stayed undefeated with her fourth win of the season for VU.  She pitched a complete game and allowed four runs (one unearned) on eight hits. She recorded four strikeouts.

In the second game, it was Dakota State who stormed out to the early lead as they led 16-2 after three innings. 

The Trojans plated eight runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Cordova’s 2-Run Home run and Hannah McFarland’s 2-RBI Double. DSU then had another big inning in the bottom of the third, bringing in seven runs.

Viterbo ended their scoring drought in the fourth, getting four straight hits that included a 2-RBI Double that helped the V-Hawks close in on the Trojans lead at 16-4.

The V-Hawks continued to add runs in the top of the fifth, scoring 12 runs on 11 hits to take the lead away from the Trojans at 19-16. It wasn’t long before the Trojans regained the lead though, as they scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 25-19 lead. 

Both teams scored again in the sixth, but only a combined three runs between the two teams as the Trojans held on for a 27-20 high scoring affair. 

Dakota State pounded out a season-high 27 hits (as well as season-high 27 runs) compared to Viterbo 23 hits. The Trojans committed six defensive miscues while the V-Hawks had four defensive errors. Both teams left six runners on base.

Dakota State collected eight doubles, three triples, and two home runs in the game. 

McFarland ignited the Trojans’ offense attack by going 4-of-6 at the plate with three doubles, single and drove in three RBIs. She scored four times. Entringer added two triples, single, and scored three times. She had an RBI. 

Cordova had a home run, double, single, and tallied four RBIs for DSU. Sims added a triple, double, single, and drove in four runs. Rosie Philop recorded a double, three singles and an RBI. She scored three times. Mason Usselman recorded a double and single. Jacquelyn Folkers tallied a double, two singles, and two RBIs. Hannah Feser and Evdos each had two singles and three RBIs. Rebecca Hazlett had a home run and an RBI.

Numerous single-game team records were set for Dakota State – 45 at-bats (previously 44 at-bats at Mayville State, N.D., on April 18, 2015), 27 runs (tied single-game with Southern Vermont on March 9, 2011), 27 hits (previously 23 hits twice versus Penn College on March 9, 2011, and Dominican University on March 6, 2006),

Individual single-game records included six at-bats (McFarland and Philop – tied single-game record), four runs (McFarland – tied single-game record), and three doubles (McFarland – tied single-game record),

James was again perfect at the plate, going 4-of-4 with a home run, double, two singles and collected two RBIs for Viterbo.  

Usselman started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State, working for 4 1/3 innings. Grace Ortmeier came in the fifth inning in relief. Cordova (W, 3-2) earned the victory after tossing 2 2/3 innings.

Maddie Wilkey (L, 4-10) took the setback in the pitching circle for Viterbo. She worked for 4 2/3 innings and registered five strikeouts. Ella Dribel pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief.

In the final game of Sunday’s triple header, the Trojans again scored double-digits to take the series win.

DSU scored early and often, as the Trojans led 3-0 after the first innings, thanks in part to an Evdos 2-Run Home run. 

Viterbo answered with one run in the top of the second, before DSU added two more in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 5-1. The Trojans led 9-1 after three innings. 

The V-Hawks began their comeback attempt in the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning. VU scored three runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. However, DSU added seven more runs in the same span, including a four-run sixth inning that was capped off by Entringer blasting a 3-Run homer. 

The Trojans went on to win 16-10 to take the series win. 

DSU outhit VU 20-16 in the game. The V-Hawks committed six defensive errors compared to the Trojans two defensive errors. VU left nine runners on base while DSU left seven runners left on base.

Folkers fueled the Trojans’ offense attack by going perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with a triple, three singles, and collected two RBIs. She scored three times and swiped one base. Entringer added a home run, double, two singles, three RBIs and scored four times. Entringer swiped three bases.

Evdos added two home runs, single and collected a game-high five RBIs for Dakota State. Sophia Cordova tallied three singles. Bricker had a double and a walk. Feser had two hits and an RBI. Sims recorded a double, single, and swiped one base.

Brittney Slocum led the V-Hawks with a home run, two singles, and two RBIs. She scored three times. 

Bricker (W, 6-8) tossed a complete game victory for DSU. She struck out seven VU’s batters, and collected a total of 17 strikeouts on the same day (registered a season-high 10 strikeouts in the first game of the tripleheader earlier Sunday).

Payton Lamont (L, 1-5) recorded the defeat after working for 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs (two unearned) on 10 hits. Morgan Fuhrer pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief.

Over the course of the tripleheader, the Trojans outscored the V-Hawks 47-40 as they earned their third straight weekend NSAA series victory. In addition, the Trojans racked up a total of 45 hits compared to the V-Hawks 43 hits.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 12-21 and 11-6 record in the league, while Viterbo fell to 10-23 overall record and 6-13 NSAA conference record.

The Trojans take a break from NSAA action this afternoon when they visit Briar Cliff for a doubleheader starting at 3pm.
