Trojans Get Second Straight Road Victory

Dakota State erased a 24-14 deficit after three quarters Saturday evening, roaring back with 24 unanswered points in the fourth-quarter to get back in the winning column with a 38-24 road victory over Mayville State.

The Comets got on the board first in the first quarter, before extending their lead 14-0. An interception at the end of the first half from Cody Brown set up the Trojans lone scoring drive in the first half with Aiden Jungers connecting with Cole Sylliaasen from 14 yards, going into the half down 14-7.

DSU came out of the intermission and marched down the field and tied the game up at 14-14 after a six yard touchdown from Tyce Ortman.

The Comets scored ten points in the third quarter, going into the fourth up 24-14. However, once Mayville State’s starting quarterback, Tim Salmon, was knocked out due to injury, the Trojans were able to take advantage of the situation, starting with getting a safety early in the quarter.

Jungers then led the offense down the field to score the touchdown and game tying two-point conversion. Jungers had two more touchdowns, both coming on the ground, to help give the Trojans the 38-24 win in Jungers first career start.

He finished going 17/25 passing for 168 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also added 91 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns. Ortman finished with 59 yards rushing, and also made some plays out of the backfield in the passing game, catching three balls for 22 yards. Sylliaasen and Michael Hybertson both finished with the same stat line, catching two passes each for 20 yards and a touchdown apiece.

Tim Salmon ended his evening with the Comets passing for 214 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

It was the eighth straight victory in the all-time series meeting for DSU, lifting their all-time series record to 21-14 record over MSU.

Dakota State improved to 4-4 overall record and 2-2 NSAA conference record. Mayville State fell to 3-5 overall record and remained winless in three NSAA contests. The Trojans will look to continue their current road-winning streak (two straight road wins) when they travel to Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday, October 29th.
