DSU Only Able to Score One Run in Non-Conference Doubleheader

In their non-conference doubleheader this week, the Dakota State softball team only scored one combined run against Briar Cliff, getting swept by scores of 6-0 and 4-1.

The Chargers brought in their first run of the first game in the bottom of the second off a solo home run, and then extended their lead off of another solo home run in the bottom of the third. 

Up 2-0, Briar Cliff added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to score six unanswered runs, defeating DSU 6-0.

The Chargers outhit the Trojans 11-5 in the game. BCU left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans four runners left on base.

Hannah McFarland and Michelle Evdos each tallied two singles for DSU. Mason Usselman added a single. Rebecca Hazlett registered a walk.

Aubrey Chichurka led BCU by going 3-of-3 at the plate with a home run, two singles, and an RBI. Kylee Lukes added a home run, double, and drove in a game-high four runs.  

Usselman (L, 0-5) took the loss after pitching three-plus innings for Dakota State. Rosie Philop tossed three innings in relief.

Maddi Duncan (W, 15-4) earned the complete game victory for Briar Cliff. She scattered five hits and registered nine strikeouts.

In game two of yesterday’s doubleheader, the Chargers opened the game up with a 2-Run Home run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead that they held the entire game. 

Trailing 3-0, the Trojans scored their first run of the day in the top of fourth. However that would be the only run DSU could score, while the Chargers added one more run in the fifth to get the 4-1 win. 

Both teams tallied five hits in the game. The Trojans left four runners on base compared to the Chargers three runners left on base.

McFarland led Dakota State with a double and single. Evdos added a double.  

Lukes led Briar Cliff with a home run and drove in three runs.  

Sophia Cordova (L, 3-3) pitched a complete game in the circle, despite the defeat for Dakota State. She allowed four runs (one unearned) on five hits.

Morgan Jones (W, 2-1) earned a complete game victory for Briar Cliff. She yielded the Trojans to one run on five hits.

Dakota State fell to a 12-23 overall record after getting swept. Briar Cliff lifted their overall record to 26-10.

The Trojans are slated to play their first home contests at Thue Field this afternoon when they resume their NSAA action, traveling to Dickinson State for a doubleheader starting Sunday.
