Madison Broncos Overcome Late Game Efforts Against the Flandreau Cardinals

The Flandreau Cardinals hosted the Madison Broncos last night, and an early Broncos lead helped them to overcome a late game comeback from the Cardinals. Coming out of the gates hot, the Broncos got four runs in the opening inning. They then followed that up with two a piece in the second and third innings. Matt Burpee’s RBI Single bringing in Heith Williams helped the Broncos get the first run that set the rest of the night into motion.

Cardinals struggled to get on base, let alone a run early on getting two hits, a walk, and an error before they finally scored their first two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Marcus Vaderbosch came in to relieve Brock Minnert in the bottom of the fifth and walked three of the first four batters in the inning while also giving up a base-hit, sending in Nick Bird and quickly ending Vanderbosch’s night on the mound.

Five more runs after the fifth inning would not be enough for the Cardinals to overcome their early struggles, even with the Broncos having three straight quick innings. The Broncos getting three more runs at the top of the seventh did the Cardinals no favors either.

The Broncos put a halt to a potential late game comeback, and outlasted the Cardinals with a final score of 11-7.

Minnert got the win for Madison, giving up only two hits and an error in the four innings he pitched. While for Flandreau, Kasen Grengs had one strikeout, but other than that had an evening to forget with eight runs on nine hits.

In terms of hitting for the Broncos, lead-off hitter Heith Williams had one run on three hits, all three hits turning into singles. Matt Burpee had an RBI Single, and RBI Double, and another single, while also bringing in three runs for the Broncos. Aspen Dahl also hit well, registering four hits (all singles), two runs, and an RBI. Dahl stole two bases as well. Tyler Tappe had two hits and two RBI’s, Trevor Johnson had two hits, an RBI, and a run. Ty Jorgenson had a RBI Double and a run in the third inning. Mitch McNary also brought in a run along with 2 hits.

For the Cardinals, Beau Severston and Kellen Culbert were the two best batters with both getting three hits a piece, a run, and an RBI. Nate Kneebone meanwhile had two hits, one being a Two RBI Single, and also brought in a run. Other batters to bring in runs for the Cardinals were Keith Cutler, Aiden Lodd, and Luke Gassman. Brett Severston and Lodd also each had an RBI.

Madison will host the Dell Rapid Mudcats this Thursday, June 16th, while Flandreau will also be at home against the Humboldt-Hartford Gamecocks. Both games are set to start at 7:30pm.Â
