Day 1 of the Cornbelt District Tournament

Two games were played last night to start the Cornbelt District Tournament, with the Salem Cubs and Dell Rapids PBR both moving on in the winners bracket.

________

In the first game, the Salem Cubs took a 4-3 win over the Humboldt-Hartford Wood Ducks in a back and forth game that favored the Cubs throughout. The Cubs got the lead early and anytime the Wood Ducks came back, the Cubs answered with a run of their own. Cubs got the game-winning run, breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth.

Landon Neguebauer for the Cubs had two big RBI’s, both bringing in Bobby Koepsell in the sixth and eighth innings. Koepsell ended with two hits and two runs.

Chase Vessels and Jacob Ellens each had two hits for the Wood Ducks, with Ellens also scoring a run and getting an RBI while Vessels had two RBI’s of his own.

________

In game two of the evening, you wouldn’t know that Dell Rapids PBR was in last place with the way they came out against the Colman A’s. PBR got the 2-0 lead early, before Colman came back to tie it up.

PBR then scored four runs from the fifth through the seventh inning, seemingly starting to separate themselves from the Aragli, before the Argali answered with three runs in the seventh and eighth, tying the game back up at 6-6.

Five runs then were scored by PBR in the ninth and final inning, helping them to get the win over Colman, with a final score of 11-6. Three of PBR’s runs in the ninth-inning came off of a huge 3 RBI Double from Trey Randel.

Ian Barker had a big night in a loss for the Colman A’s, getting four hits, three of which were doubles, along with two RBIs and two runs.
