Broncos Hold Off the Cubs Comeback Attempt

A week after blowing them out in only six-innings, the Madison Broncos had a tougher time against the Salem Cubs last night after going into extra innings.

Madison scored the first run of the game in the opening inning, and then got one run in both the fifth and sixth innings before scoring three more in the top of the seventh. The Broncos were up 6-0 before the Cubs got on the scoreboard, but once they did start scoring the comeback became real.

Salem answered Madison’s three-run inning in the seventh with a run of their own, before bringing four runs in in the bottom of the eighth, bringing them within reach with a score of 6-5.

The Broncos tried to pull away with one more run in the top of the ninth, however the Cubs tied it up with two runs, extending the game into extra innings.

Madison put a halt to a comeback from the Cubs in the tenth inning, scoring four runs and giving them a 11-7 lead. After fighting hard, Salem’s comeback fell short after not being able to score any runs in extra innings, losing to Madison by a final score of 11-7.

Both teams hit well, especially towards the end, with each team getting double-digit hits. Madison ended the night with 11 hits and Salem finished with 12 hits.

Aspen Dahl and Nick Bird both led the Broncos in hits with two hits apiece. Both players were able to each score a run as well, and Dahl also had two RBI’s. Legion player, Gage Nelson, led the Broncos in RBI’s with three, and also had a hit and a run.

Heith Williams, Mitch McNary, Tyler Tappe, Josh Giles, and Ty Jorgenson all had a hit and a run for the Broncos. Trevor Johnson also secured a hit while scoring two runs. Matt Burpee, Williams, and Giles each had an RBI.

Cole Cheeseman was the leader on the night in terms of hits for both teams, getting three hits for the Cubs while also scoring a run.

Tyler Earls, Tyler Cleveland, and Bobby Koepsell had two hits each, with Earls and Koepsell also scoring a run each. Kyle Tuschen, Steve Mehlbrech, and Peyton Cleveland were the other players to get hits for the Cubs with each getting one hit and also each getting a run. Luke Loudenberg also scored a run for the Cubs.

Cleveland and Mehlbrech each had two RBI’s for the Cubs, leading the team, while other players to get RBI’s were Brian Duxbury, Earls, and Cleveland.

Both teams will be back at home tomorrow, with Madison Broncos hosting the Flandreau and the Salem Cubs hosting the Dell Rapids Mudcats
