8/17/20 –

Playing in the 2020 Class B State Championship game on Sunday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, the Alexandria Angels defended their title with an 11-3 win over Canova. The Angels scored two runs in the top of the first and never trailed in the contest. Canova was unable to get that big inning, scoring runs in the first inning, fifth inning and seventh. Trey Krier started on the mound and lasted seven innings, giving up 14 hits and six earned runs. The Angels got a complete game from Jed Schmitt, who was named co-MVP of the tournament along with teammate Cole Wenande. Krier was the batting champion, going 9 for 15 (a clean .600 average).

Prior to Sunday’s Championship, both teams had picked up lopsided wins in the semi-finals. Alexandria defeated Winner-Colome 13-2 and Canova blanked Wynot 14-0 on Saturday. The Gang, playing in the state title game for the second time in three years, ended their season with a 17-7 record. Next year, the State Tournament will be held in Sioux Falls and hosted by Augustana.
