Roger Kipp, 83, of Montrose passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at his home under hospice care.  Visitation will be from 5-7 on Thursday, September 22 with a 7 pm prayer service and time of sharing at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.  A memorial service will begin at 10:30 am on Friday, September 23 at Montrose United Methodist Church in Montrose.

Roger Paul Kipp was born June 30, 1939 to Paul and Dorathea (Boysen) Kipp on the family farm in rural Montrose, SD.  He attended Montrose High School graduating in 1957.  He attended SDSU majoring in Animal Husbandry graduating in 1961.  After college he worked as the manager of the ASCS office in Salem, SD and farmed.  In 1961 he enlisted in the Air Force reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, TX.

He married the love of his life, Elizabeth Adele Crumley, July 20, 1963.  The had four children.  In 1966, Roger was released from the Air Force and brought his wife and infant son home to South Dakota and the family farm where he resided the rest of his life.  His occupation, and his hobby, were farming and animal husbandry.  He retired from the farm at the age of 75, but he enjoyed helping his sons Jerome and Gregory when they took over the farming operation.

In 1971 Roger was named Outstanding Young Farmer by the South Dakota Bankers Association and Jaycees.  He was recognized for his achievements in soil conservation in 1981 and 1985.  He was founding member and then president of the McCook County chapter of the South Dakota Pork Producers.  He was a longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Orland, SD serving as a Sunday School teacher and member of the Church Council.  He served as a 4H leader and a member of the Montrose School Board, a member of the McCook County and State Extension Boards and the Ramsey Township board.

Roger relished going to the family cabin in northern New Mexico that he helped build in 1964.  It gave him an opportunity to share with his children and grandchildren the experience of trout fishing in the streams, hiking the mountain trails and exploring Northern New Mexico.  Later in his life, Roger enjoyed going on hunting trips with family to the Black Hills and northwest South Dakota.  He treasured traveling with his children and grandchildren to Washington, DC, Alaska, Oregon, Upstate New York, Texas, California, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Lake of the Woods, MN.

Roger was a loyal fan of football and basketball at his alma mater, SDSU, as well as USD, USF and Augustana University, the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings.  Roger liked attending his granddaughter’s dance recitals, his grandchildren’s piano recitals and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports.

Roger is survived by: his wife, Adele; three sons, Jerome (Barb), Gregory (Robyn) of Montrose and Adam (Angela) of Sioux Falls; a daughter, Lisa (Ed) Nydam of Vermillion; grandchildren, AJ Kipp, Dylan Kipp, Sara (Carson) Schaa, Isaac Kipp, Gavin Kipp and Autumn Kipp; step-grandchildren, Kristi (Tony) Meyer, Justin (Becca) Hageman, Courtney Damman, Brandon Damman, and Sam Erks; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlene Larson; a sister-in-law, Eunice Kipp and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Leroy Kipp and a brother-in-law, Dennis Larson.
