Robert L. Schnider, 86, of Salem passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls.  A memorial mass will begin at 2:30 pm on Friday, October 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

Robert Schnider was born January 12, 1936 in Sioux Falls to John Clarence “Dutch” and Mary (Wiltsey) Schnider.  He grew up in Salem and attended country school and St. Mary’s School.  On June 15, 1956 he married Shirley Jean LeClair.  This union was blessed with five children, Dawn, Bob, Bill, Ron and Patty.  Bob spent many years running excavator for his father, later owning the business. After selling the business he went to work for other owners that bought the business. He later went to work for Jostens and Dakota Beverage in Sioux Falls and worked for the City of Salem. He remained busy helping family and friends until his death. He loved restoring antique cars, fishing and hunting with his sons and son-in-law.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem and volunteered on the Salem Fire Department serving as chief for several years, the Salem Ambulance as an EMT and the Salem City Council.

Bob is survived by: his wife, Jean of Salem; children, Dawn (Keith) Reif of Lennox, Bob (Donna) Schnider of Piedmont, Bill Schnider of Chester, Ron (Robin) Schnider of Salem and Patty (Dale) Hartsel of Brookings; grandchildren, Naome (Chad) Poppe, Jess Reif, Kristi Schnider, Josh (Katie) Schnider, Nick Schnider, Jessie (Adam) Lund and Brandy Standing Soldier; great-grandchildren, Easton, Hayden, Parker, Teagen, Luella, Rita, Charlotte, Alex, Devyn, Lily, Emily, Tierra, Dominick, Jerome and Jeremiah; siblings, Eugene (Dona) Schnider of Sioux Falls, Don (Shirley) Schnider of FL and Kathie (Reuben) Roth of Brookings.  He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Hazel Schnider, an infant brother, great-grandson, Wakan and his cousin who was raised like a brother, Jim (Joann) Schnider.
