Richard L. Soma

Richard L. Soma, age 73, of Oldham, SD, passed away Monday, March 18, 2024, at his daughters home near Madison under the loving care of his family and hospice care. Funeral  Service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Oldham Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Friday, at the church with a Prayer Service at 6 pm, and one preceding the service at the church. Burial will be at Oldham Lutheran Cemetery.

Rick was born June 23,1950, at Ramona, SD. to Richard O. and Marian (Jensen) Soma, the oldest of 3 children. He was baptized and confirmed at the Oldham Lutheran Church. Rick graduated from Oldham High School with the Class of 1968, forming deep and lasting friendships. He continued his education at Dakota State College in Madison, SD earning his BS in Education, obtaining his Master’s degree from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD.

On August 5, 1972 Rick was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Susan (Bickett) Soma, welcoming two children, David and Jennifer.

Rick started his teaching career in 1972 spending 7 years in Draper SD teaching and coaching, followed by a 42 year tenure at the Iroquois School District, where he excelled as both a business teacher and High School Principal. He touched the lives of countless students and was a friend and mentor to many. He also developed a lifelong love of farming at an early age continuing to farm the land his entire life.

He loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was caring, patient, a good listener, and always willing to give positive advice.

Rick is survived by his son David (Kori) of Prescott, AZ and his daughter Jennifer (Brandon) Riedel of Madison, SD. Six grandchildren, Salem, Trace, Nona, Dakota, Collin and Brookelyn. His mother, Marian Soma of Howard, sister Shari (Scott) Lee of Alexandria, MN, sister-in-law Marge Soma of Madison and brother-in-law Mike (Connie) Bickett Oldham as well as several nieces and nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by Susan, on November 18, 2023, his wife of 51 years, his father Richard, his brother Darwin, his mother and father in law Stanley and Donna Bicket and brothers-in law, Paul Bickett, Terry Bickett and Jeff Wittrock.

He meant so much to so many and will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
