Lyle Herman Huls, 82, of Hartford passed away on Friday December 20th, 2019 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls surrounded by family and friends.   Funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 27, at 10:30AM at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Humboldt.  A prayer service will be held at 7PM on Thursday at St Ann’s with family available at 6PM.

Lyle was born on September 18, 1937 in Salem SD to Maurice and Agnes (Krantz) Huls. He graduated from Brandon High School.  Lyle married the love of his life, Carol on June 6, 1985 in Hartford.  He worked in maintenance at Morrell’s for 32 years and then at the YMCA for 14 years prior to his retirement in 2002.

Lyle’s passion was working with his horses and llamas on the farm. He is a member of the Dakota Harness Club, SD Draft Horse Association, and the Humboldt Threshing Bee.  Driving horses, plowing, and manure hauling gave Lyle great pleasure.  For 32 years, he participated in the McCrossan Boy’s Ranch annual wagon train to Prairie Village.  His teams were a part of many parades and weddings. He loved giving carriage, buggy and sleigh rides.  As a longtime supporter of Make A Wish, he and his horses provided many rides to children.  Lyle and Carol attended the Waverly Horse Sale for many years.  Additional hobbies included bowling (where he and Carol met), playing cards, waterskiing, drag racing, working on and driving old tractors, and making homemade ice cream for family holidays.  Lyle belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Elks and St Ann’s Catholic Church.

Lyle is survived by:  his wife, Carol of Hartford; daughter, Shawn Irvine of Utah; grandson, Zachary (Allison) Irvine and their children, Hemmingway (Hemi) and Sparrow, all of Utah; two brothers, Lowell of Humboldt and Jerry (LaVonne) of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Larry (Carol) Mahoney of Missouri; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings and their spouses, Donna Jean, Phyllis, Marie and Ray Carmody, Dorothy and Emil Puthoff, Margaret and Marty McAreavey, Rose Marie and Mac McCoy, Betty and Leo Gaspar, Art and Marie Huls, Ron Huls, Barb and Darrell Tverberg, Vince and Yvonne Huls and Lawanda Huls.
