John Rieck

John Rieck, 76, of Montrose SD passed away December 24, 2023 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.  Memorial service will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Montrose.  Visitation will begin one hour prior.

John Lewis Rieck was born on August 18, 1947 to Cecil and Dorothy (Finch) Rieck in Newton IA. He was later joined by his brother Mike and sister Colleen. He grew up in Bondurant Iowa, graduating from Bondurant Farrar High School in 1965.

John served in the Army  from 1966-1969. He spent a year in Germany and a year in Vietnam with the  1st Air Cavalry Division. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 154 in Montrose for over 50 years.

John married Ann Rasmussen on November 15, 1969 in Elkhart Iowa and welcomed two daughters Kendra and Karen. In  1975 they moved to Montrose.

John had many jobs over the years. He worked for Tote Trucking, Kapp Lines, the City of Montrose and Avera Hospital. He didn’t stay retired for too long, he had to be busy. He loved to help.  When someone asked he was there to help drive the semis, a tractor or a skid loader. He enjoyed his coffee time at Friendly’s in Humboldt and the Montrose Gas Station.

He is survived by his wife Ann, daughters Kendra (Eric) Huls and Karen (Jeff) Hanisch, five grandchildren: Brent Hanisch, Lane and Zaidee Huls, Kiersten Hanisch (Nate Smith) and An Phan, great grandson Ryker Huls; Sister-in-laws  Kathy Rieck, Mary Jane Donelan and Judy (Gary) Sesker and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents his brother Mike Rieck, sister Colleen Gering, special uncle  Richard Rieck and brother-in-law Bernard Donelan and many other friends and relatives.
