Duane D. Carey, 68, of Hartford, SD passed away Monday, June 7, 2021 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Duane bravely battled cancer for nearly six years. Funeral services will begin at 10 am on Friday, June 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
Duane Carey was born May 29, 1953 in Mitchell, SD to Leonard and Bessie (VanDer Lugt) Carey. He grew up near Spencer, SD and graduated from Spencer High School. On June 23, 1990 he married Anita Schiddel in Orlando, Florida. They were blessed with two sons, Adam and Matt.
Duane and family moved back from Orlando in 2007 to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be closer to friends and family. As a man who loved sharing great deals, Duane enjoyed his career in real estate and owned his own business, Great Places Realty Corporation. In addition to real estate, Duane ran a small entertainment business that included a train, paddle boats, carnival games and bounce houses. His true love was his family and enjoyed taking his family on boat rides during the summer and fishing.
Duane is survived by: his wife, Anita of Hartford; his sons, Adam of Brandon and Matt (Amber) of Sioux Falls; his siblings, Roger of Mitchell, Karen (Allan) Bodlak of Wakefield, NE and David (Carrie) of Tea; and nephews, Michal and Jonathan Bodlak. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
