Charles (Chuck) F. Sheffield

Charles (Chuck) F. Sheffield, 82, peacefully passed away at the Madison Regional Health with his close family at his bedside. Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Ellsworth Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Graceland Cemetery at Madison.

Chuck was born at home in Stickney, South Dakota, on December 21, 1941, to William and Dena (VanDerheiden) Sheffield, he was the seventh of nine children. The family lived on various farms until his father passed away. They then lived in Mt. Vernon and Mitchell, SD, until his mother passed away.

Chuck attended one year in college in Vermillion, SD before moving to Satanta, Kansas to work in his sister’s (Clara) and her husbands (Walt) filing station. There he found his lifelong wife, Wanda (Johnson) Shefffield. After they were married he worked at the Collingwood Grain Elevator and lived there until their three chidlren were born, two daughters – Jarrie (Sheffield) Leighton, Kelli Sheffield, and one son, Charles Todd Sheffield. In 1971, they moved to a farm near Ramona, SD, living there until moving into Madison. These years were filled with him selling livestock feed for Moorman’s Manufacturing. When the children were grown and out of the house the couple moved to Havana, Arkansas to help his in-laws transition from the home to living with a daughter.

In 2004 they returned to Madison where he lived out the rest of his life. He loved to play cards, camp with friends, keep a great yard, garden, and he restored old Jeep Willys.

Greatful for having shared in his life, wife Wanda Sheffield, two daughters, Jarri (Clay) Leighton of Madison, SD and Kelli Sheffield of Greensboro, NC. One daugther-in-law, Nancy (Sheffield) Turner of Reno, Nevada, and one sister Clara Mclver of Cheney, Kansas. Six grandchildren, Cole (Kyla) Leighton of Omaha, NE. Charlie (Felicia), Aaron, and Sean Sheffield of Nevada, and Elsa Leighton of Nevada, Jessica Leigton of Madison. Four sisters-in-law, Frances (Woodrow) Johnson, Marliss (Edward) Sheffield, Linda (Fred) Sheffield, and Lourie (Bob) Sheffield, along with many nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his son, Charles Todd Sheffield, parents and six brothers, Johnny, William, Donald, Edward, Fred and Bob. One sister, Bonnie Sheffield, his in-laws, Clyde and Emma Jean Johnson, three brothers-in-law, Walt (Clara) Mclver, Woodrow (Frances) Johnson, Bill Johnson and many other in-laws.
