State approves funding for area bridge replacement projects

Bridge replacement projects in several area counties were approved Thursday by the state Transportation Commission.  The Commission awarded 49 total bridge replacement projects totaling approximately 25-million dollars at their meeting yesterday in Pierre.

Project award recipients in our area include Brookings, Miner, Minnehaha, and Moody Counties, along with the City of Carthage.  

113 applications, totaling close to 80-million dollars in total project costs, were received by the South Dakota Department of Transportation. Seven cities submitted eight applications and 37 counties submitted 105 applications.

The projects will require a just more than 18-percent local match.  During the 2020 Legislative session, approximately four-million dollars was appropriated to help offset the local match resulting in approximately five-to-six-percent share for the selected local governments.
