Madison Man Sentenced on Failure to Register Charge

A Madison man will serve time in the state penitentiary for failing to register as a sex offender. 30-year-old Joseph Michael Smith was arrested on December 19th of last year after failing to register as a sex offender within 3 days of living at his parents house.

Law enforcement discovered he had been living there since that past Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, Circuit Judge Pat Pardy sentenced Smith to serve 2 years on a failure to appear charge. Smith was given credit for 155 days served. On the charge of failure to register as a sex offender, Pardy sentenced Smith to 3 years, but suspended that sentence based on several conditions, including that Smith pay court costs and restitution, as well as reimburse the county for his court-appointed attorney’s fees.
