Madison City Commission reviews marijuana zoning ordinance

Madison City Commissioners have approved the first reading of an ordinance addressing zoning for cannabis establishments in the city.

City Administrator Jameson Berreth told commissioners Monday that the ordinance expands the areas where cannabis dispensaries can be located from what they approved last fall, and adds more establishments that will be allowed in the city.  Those include cannabis testing, cultivation, and cannabis product manufacturing facilities.  According to the ordinance, the city will allow up to two cannabis dispensaries, and two testing, two cultivation, and two product manufacturing facilities.

Berreth said that not all of the facilities will be allowed in all zoning districts.

Berreth said the ordinance also outlines distances for the facilities.

Berreth said that the city hasn’t received any applications for permits for any cannabis dispensaries at this time.  The city commission established the licensing application fee of 15-hundred dollars for cannabis establishments last fall, along with an annual fee for the license of one-dollar per capita based on the city’s official census population.Â
