Lake Herman State Park Manager John Bame Takes a Look Back on Last Year’s Derecho

It’s been nearly one year since a derecho rolled across South Dakota, causing widespread damage, and killing one person. Areas of Lake County and the city of Madison were heavily damaged by the storm.

Lake Herman State Park suffered extensive tree damage in the storm. Park Manager John Bame says the park lost over 400 trees in the storm. The cleanup from that is still underway.

A number of people were at the park the day of the storm, holding a tail collection for the state’s Nest Predator Bounty Program. Bame said they were able to find shelter quickly.

KJAM Radio will continue to look back at the impact of last year’s derecho all this week. Tomorrow we’ll hear from Madison Mayor Roy Lindsey.Â
