Lake County Commission candidates take part in Candidate Forum

The three candidates vying for the two seats open on the Lake County Commission in the November general election took part in a Candidate Forum Monday night.  The forum was sponsored by the Greater Madison Area Chamber of Commerce’s Governmental Affairs Committee and was held in the Tunheim Classroom Building Auditorium on the campus of Dakota State University in Madison.  The forum was also available for people to watch on the Chamber’s Facebook page.

Incumbents Kelli Wollmann and Aaron Johnson and challenger Corey Johnke answered a variety of questions during the forum.  One of the topics discussed was what can be done to improve county roads.

Current commissioner Aaron Johnson, who has served six years on the commission, said that the problem is a lack of funding, making it harder to get needed projects done.

Current commissioner Kelli Wollmann, who is seeking her fourth term on the commission, said that she would encourage state legislators to consider new revenue sources for counties to help with the problem with county roads, or else the county will have to look at other avenues as well.

Challenger Corey Johnke said that funding for county roads is an issue and other ideas need to be looked into and considered to try to help the situation.

The Lake County Commission candidates on Monday also answered questions about the bypass road, budget cuts, housing developments by Lake Madison, and the proposed Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline.

Lake County voters will vote for two of the candidates to serve four-year terms on the commission.  The general election is Tuesday, November 8th.
