Madison City Commissioners on Monday voted to deem the Madison Police Department as essential workers, effective immediately.  The commissioners met in executive session at the end of Monday’s meeting and took the action after that.

Commissioner Adam Shaw made the motion, which included protocol for those within the police department to follow.  Some of that includes that if they test positive for COVID-19 or have an in-home case of COVID-19 where they cannot isolate from the individual, then they are out of work immediately.  If the officer is deemed a close contact, they must wear a mask at all times during their shift.  And also, if the officer is a close contact, then they or their supervisor must notify the city’s Human Resources Department immediately.

Shaw said that a policy for the rest of the city’s employees who will be deemed essential workers will be brought forward at next week’s commission meeting.
