City approves first reading of property tax levy ordinance

The Madison City Commission held a special meeting on Tuesday.  During that meeting the commissioners approved the first reading of an ordinance certifying the property tax levies for the city.  Finance Officer Sonya Wilt told commissioners that the property tax levies for general purposes will increase by just more than four-percent, but with the city not having the general obligation bond for the Madison Aquatic Center, the overall total of the levy is actually lower than last year.

The city’s total property tax levy included in the ordinance is more than two-point-one-million dollars.

Wilt said that the second reading of the property tax levy ordinance will be held during the commission’s next regular meeting next week and will be effective before the end of the month.  The  tax levies must be certified and sent to the Lake County Auditor on or before October 1st.
