No. 8 Madison Overpowered by No. 1 Dell Rapids; Lose 52-0 in the 2023 SDHSAA Playoff Quarterfinals

The No. 8 seed Madison Bulldogs season has come to an end after being shutout by the No. 1 seed Dell Rapids Quarriers in the 2023 SDHSAA Playoff Quarterfinals, 52-0 at Quarrier Field.

It was all Dell Rapids from the jump and they jumped all over Madison. Clock issues at Quarrier Field and a few delays early didn’t make a difference for the Quarriers. Not only was it a shutout for the Bulldogs, the game ended at halftime due to the 50+ point deficit.

The defending champions in 11A made a statement with this win as they look to go back-to-back as state champions.

It was by far the lowest offensive output for Madison all season. They finished with -26 yards rushing and 54 passing yards and a net total of just 28 yards of offense. Madison only had four first downs in the game.

Dell Rapids finished with another 300+ yard rushing output of 323 yards. Mason Stubbe had 11 carries for 153 yards and Jack Henry had three carries for 100 yards. They ended the day with 376 yards of total offense. They had 22 offensive plays and garnished first downs on 14 of them.

Conclusion

For Madison, their season comes to a close. A gritty year for the Bulldogs it was for sure. They began their season 0-6 for the first time in 12 years, but didn’t count themselves out. Finishing their season out with 3-0 and a big win over Lennox. Only allowing 17 points in those games and posting 76 points in that span.

They’ll return key pieces next season, but will lose some as well. Most of the starters on both sides of the ball will be back. Along with healthy versions of Ben Brooks and Carson Wolf. The Bulldogs turned things around for themselves and made the playoffs with those three crucial wins. This team fought each week and got better over the course of the year. There’s no doubt about it.
