Moses two interception day leads Trojan defense to 7-0 win at Mayville

The Dakota State football team has relied on their defense all season long, and Saturday that defense allowed just 106 yards and shutout Mayville State 7-0.  The Trojans avenged an earlier 13-12 loss this season to the Comets.

Both teams traded punts after the first three possessions of the game before the Trojans missed a field goal attempt at the end of the first quarter. Both teams turned the ball over twice in the 2nd quarter, for a 0-0 tie at half time.

Two big plays in the 3rd quarter set DSU up for their only scoring drive. Jovi Wolf returned the 2nd half kick-off of 32 yards to the MSU 48-yard line. Then on a 4th and 5, AJ Donovan connected with Austin Lake for 39 yards to the Comet 4-yard line. Ty Ortman then ran in the game’s only TD.

Deveon Moses intercepted his second pass of the game in the 4th quarter to seal the win for the Trojans. Trey Ortman also had an interception in the game. Taron Serr had 6 tackles to lead the defense. Caleb Dwyer had 4 tackles and a sack. Donovan finished the game 11-for-23 with 168 yards and 2 interceptions. Ortman ran the ball 26 times for 126 yards and the game’s only score.

With the victory, Dakota State clinched a sole possession for second place finish in the North Star Athletic Association conference standings.  DSU also secured a winning record for the third time in the last four seasons. The Trojans are now 6-3 overall, and 4-3 in the North Star.

Dakota State wraps up their 2024 season Saturday when they visit No. 17 ranked Dickinson State at 1 p.m.
