Madison Black finishes 6th at State VFW Tournament

Madison Black finished in 6th place at this weekend’s 14U State VFW Baseball Tournament. Madison opened the tournament with a 7-4 loss to Belle Fourche on Friday. Madison fell behind by two runs in the fourth innings, but scored 2 in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.Â
Belle Fourche broke the game open in the fifth, scoring 5 runs on 3 hits. Caeyn Howard had the big hit in the inning, driving in 3 runs with a bases clearing single. Howard also go the win for Belle Fourche, striking out 13 batters over 7 innings.Â
On Saturday Madison jumped out to a big lead early, on their way to a 10-0 win over Elk Point-Jefferson. Boyd Pooler had 3 hits and scored 3 runs to lead the Madison offense. Cooper Bergheim scored a run and drove in 2. Pooler also pitched a complete game in the shutout, striking out 8 batters over five innings.Â
The win Saturday sent Madison Black into Sunday’s Consolation Championship game against Vermillion. Madison opened the scoring in the 1st, with three runs in the top of the inning. Vermillion tied the game in the 3rd, but Madison took the lead back again in the 4th, on a bases loaded walk from Bergheim.Â
Madison led 5-4 entering the bottom of the 7th, but control problems gave Vermillion life. Vermillion’s first two batters were each hit by a pitch. Ryan Vitt then tied the game with a base hit, and Duke Job drove in the winning run two batters later, as Vermillion walked it off with a 6-5 win.Â
West Central won the 14U State Championship on Sunday, with a 6-5 win over Mobride.Â
